Coloured county map of Somerset from the first edition of John Speed’s “Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain” published by John Sudbury and George Humble in 1611. A large inset showing a detailed plan of the city of Bath appears in the top left of the map together with images of three baths, its coat of arms and a key identifying 24 important sites. The map is decorated with the royal coat of arms, sailing ships and the arms of the noble families of the county. A description of the county appears on the verso in English. Other than some light toning, a strong, dark impression on heavy, stable paper in excellent condition. 38 cm x 51 cm
