Coloured map of Middlesex from the rare Sudbury and Humble Latin edition John Speed’s “Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain”. Considered to be the most decorative map of the county, it includes views of St. Peter’s (Westminster Abbey) and St. Paul’s cathedrals with brief notes on each contained on the open pages of two books. At the top of the map on either side, there are inset plans of London and Westminster together with their coats of arms. A description of the region appears on the verso in Latin. The map has been professionally restored whereby lens paper has been applied verso to stabilise the paper and repair cracks to the old verdigris colouring as well as reinstating some small chips to the image. A charming old coloured example with faults that would frame up nicely and is priced accordingly. 38 cm x 50.5 cm
