Coloured town plan of Canterbury from the landmark Braun & Hogenberg atlas of cities throughout the world entitled “Civitates Orbis Terrarum” first published in 1572. The plan, initially appearing in 1588, shows a detailed view of 16th century Canterbury including its wall, famous cathedral and local residents in period clothing. A description of the town appears verso in Latin. The map has repairs to a tear extending from the right margin to about 3 cms into the image and to a small area of loss in the centrefold. Otherwise an early, beautifully coloured example in very good condition. 29 cm x 43 cm
