Coloured map of the British Isles from the 1587 French edition of Abraham Ortelius’ landmark atlas “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum”, the first modern atlas of the world. This map, which was first included in the Ortelius atlas in 1573, is based on a 1568 manuscript map of Wales by Humphry Llhuyd as well as Mercator’s 1564 wall map of the British Isles. Decorated with a sailing ship and sea monster, the map also contains an ornate cartouche that reads: “Map of Wales by the author Humphrey Lhuyd, the Welshman from Denbigh. The right side of the map shows various places in Wales in each of their Latin, English and Britain (local dialect) names. A description of Wales appears on the verso in French. A strong, dark impression, the map is in excellent condition. 37 cm x 49.5 cm
