Finely coloured carte-a-figures map of the Roman Empire from the Bassett & Chiswell edition of John Speed’s “A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World”. The map depicts the area ruled by the Roman Empire at the height of its powers and includes a brief narrative on the front describing the lands that were conquered during its rise. It is decorated across the top with views of six cities, Rome, Genoa, Jerusalem, Venice, Constantinople and Alexandria, and panels down both sides depicting men and women of the region in period dress.
