Finely coloured map of the British Isles from an early George Humble edition of John Speed’s “A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World”. The map depicts major battles fought in England, Wales and Ireland from 1066 until 1588, concluding with the Spanish Armada which is shown in its various stages starting in the English Channel and finishing as wrecks to the north of Ireland. This map first appeared in 1627 and was included in all subsequent atlases containing both the Theatre and Prospect. It is based on a large scale invasions map ca 1601, which is the earliest known printed example done by John Speed. A narrative in English appears verso. The map has a repaired bottom centrefold split and some soiling to the margins, otherwise the map is a strong dark impression in very good condition. 37.5 cm x 51 cm
