Old coloured double hemisphere celestial chart by Pieter Schenk, perhaps for inclusion in his “Atlas Contractus”, which was published at that time. The engraving features two large hemispheres showing the classical constellations found in the northern and southern night skies. They are surrounded by six circular charts; three of which describe the structure of the solar system according to Ptolemy, Tycho Brahe and Nicolas Copernicus. The three other charts show the phases of the moon, the orientation of the earth as it revolves around the sun and the effect of the motion of the moon on the Earth’s tides. Blank verso. Portions of the verso have been professionally strengthened with lens paper to support cracks to the verdigris, otherwise it a lovely, old-coloured example in very good condition. 49 cm x 55 cm
