Finely coloured map of Ireland from the 1579 Latin edition of Abraham Ortelius’ landmark atlas “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum”, the first modern atlas of the world. This map, which was included in the Ortelius atlas since 1573, is based on Mercator’s 1564 map of the British Isles. In common many Irish maps dating from this period, the island is oriented to the west and is decorated with two strap-work cartouches and a sailing ship. A description of Ireland appears on the verso in Latin. The map is a strong, dark impression in excellent condition. 35.5 cm x 48.5 cm
