Superb carte-a-figures map of Italy from the William Humble edition of John Speed’s “A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World”. The map, which is among the most sought after and decorative maps of the region, includes the Italian peninsula, the islands of Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily and the small parts of the surrounding countries. It is decorated across the top with views of six cities, Verona, Naples, Venice, Rome, Genoa and Florence, and the coats of arms of the Pope and Venice. The panels down both sides depict pairs of men and women of the region in period dress and the coats of arms of and Corsica. A description of Italy in English appears verso. Other than a repair to a small hole, this beautifully coloured map is a strong, dark impression in excellent condition. 39.5 cm x 51.5 cm
