A finely coloured map of the Caspian Sea and the surrounding area from van Keulen’s “Nieuwe Lichtende Zee-Faakel (New Shining Sea Torch)”. The atlas, which was first published in 1681 and eventually reached six volumes, contained some of the finest sea chart and maps available at the time. The map principally comprises a detailed chart of the Caspian Sea, oriented to the east, and also shows portions of the various countries bordering the sea including Astrakhan, Samarkand, Tartary, Georgia and Persia. The map is decorated with detailed prospect of the city of Astrakhan at the top and two smaller views of Samgael and Derbent. Blank verso. Other than an ink stain near the top and a small tear just entering the lower right hand portion of the map, a very good example of this rare map. 51.5 cm x 59.5 cm
