Finely coloured map of Oxfordshire that is documented by Skelton as being included in the ca 1693 Philip Lea edition of Christopher Saxton’s atlas, “The Shires of England and Wales…”. To fill out his atlas, Lea acquired plates of other mapmakers for certain counties that were not separately represented in Saxton’s atlas, including John Seller’s map of Oxfordshire that was one of six folio county maps he produced ca 1680. Lea reworked the plate by erasing Seller’s imprint, which can be faintly seen to the left of the title cartouche, inserting his name in the map title and adding decorative features including the coats of arms of the colleges of Oxford University. The also includes roads based on Ogilby’s work, a list of the county’s market towns and hundreds and a key with symbols identifying Parliament Towns, Market Towns, Parish Towns, Gentlemen’s Houses and Villages. Blank verso. Other than some minor discolouration to the centrefold, a lovely example of this rarely seen map with full margins in excellent condition. 36.5 cm x 48.5 cm
