Beautifully old coloured map of the ancient Low Countries from the ca 1584 edition of Abraham Ortelius’ landmark atlas “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum”, the first modern atlas of the world. This map, which was included in the Ortelius atlas since 1584, shows the Low Countries as they were under the rule of the Romans, with much of the land heavily forested. It is decorated with a three intricate cartouches displaying the map’s title, a dedication by Ortelius and an inscription of the royal privilege. A description of the ancient Low Countries appears on the verso. The map is a finely coloured, strong, dark impression in excellent condition. 37.5 cm x 49 cm
