Old-coloured sea chart, heightened with gold, from Volume 1 of Johannes van Keulen’s atlas of sea charts entitled “De Nieuwe Groote Lichtende Zee-Fackel” first published in Amsterdam in 1680. The atlas proved to be very popular and continued to be published throughout the 18th century, during which time it was expanded to six volumes by his heirs including Gerard, Johannes II and Gerard Hulst. This chart, which is oriented to the west, centres the Irish Sea and covers the east coast of Ireland from Olderfleet Castle near Larne (“OldFliet”) in the north to Waterford Harbour in the south, showing the cities of Belfast and Dublin (“Dubling”). On the east coast of the Irish Sea, coastal areas of Scotland, England and Wales are shown from Luce Bay in southwest Scotland in the north to St. Davids, Pembrokeshire in the south, taking in the cities of Carlisle, Lancaster, Liverpool, Chester and Aberystwyth. The chart is decorated with a title cartouche surrounded by a pastoral scene, compass roses and sailing ships. Blank verso. Other than some minor discolouration, a lovely example in very good condition. 50.5 cm x 58 cm
