Coloured map of Ireland from the 1603 Latin edition of Abraham Ortelius’ landmark atlas “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum”, the first modern atlas of the world. This map, which was included in the Ortelius atlas since 1573, is based on Mercator’s 1564 map of the British Isles. In common many Irish maps dating from this period, the island is oriented to the west and is decorated with two strap-work cartouches and a sailing ship. A description of Ireland appears on the verso in Latin. Other than some repaired wormholes to blank bottom margin well away from the image, the map is a finely coloured strong impression in very good condition. 35.5 cm x 48 cm
