Old coloured double hemisphere map of the world from Seutter’s “Atlas Novus”, first published in Augsburg in 1720. This finely engraved, very detailed map shows the world in two hemispheres surrounded by 12 smaller hemispherical projections including views of the north and south poles. As the map predates Cook’s discoveries, Australia and New Zealand are only partially shown. Curiously, California is still mapped as an island and Japan is shown in a very unrealistic manner. The map is decorated with allegorical wind heads surrounding the two large hemispheres; reminiscent of much earlier world maps done in the 16th century. Blank verso. Other than some marginal repairs with very minor loss, a finely coloured example in excellent condition. 49.5 cm x 57.5 cm
