Beautifully old coloured map of the Ottoman Empire from the 1609 or 1612 Latin edition of Abraham Ortelius’ landmark atlas “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum”, the first modern atlas of the world. The map, of which this is the second state with the modified title cartouche, was included in the Ortelius atlas since 1570 and is based on Gastaldi's wall map of Asia. This map covers an area including the present day countries of Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia; among others. It is decorated with a large ornate title cartouche, a sea monster and sailing ships. A description of Turkish Empire appears on the verso in Latin. Other than a repair to the bottom margin, well away from the image, the map is an old coloured, strong, dark impression with wide margins in excellent condition. 37 cm x 49.5 cm
