Uncoloured map of Scotland from the ca 1612 Spanish edition of Abraham Ortelius’ landmark atlas “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum”, the first modern atlas of the world. This map, which was included in the Ortelius atlas since 1573, is based on Mercator’s 1564 eight sheet wall map and is oriented to the west as was common in very early maps of the British Isles. It is decorated with a large strap-work title cartouche, a sea monster and a sailing ship. A description of Scotland appears on the verso in Spanish. The map is a strong, dark impression with wide margins in excellent condition. 35.5 cm x 47.5 cm
