Finely coloured map of Virginia and the surrounding region from a Latin edition of Blaeu’s atlas of the world entitled “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Sive Atlas Novus”. The plate was originally engraved by Jodocus Hondius Jr. in 1618 and was subsequently purchased by Willem Blaeu in 1629, who inserted his name in place of Hondius in the publisher’s cartouche and included it in the family’s atlases during the next 40 years. Showing the discoveries of John Smith and retaining the details and orientation to the west originally shown in Smith’s 1612 map, it is decorated with a scene of the chief of the Powhatan with members of his tribe in a lodge, a Susquehanna Indian, a “Notarum Explicatio”, or key, that identifies habitation types and a large British royal coat of arms. A description of Virginia appears verso in Latin. Other than a few wormhole repairs to the top margin, well away from the image, the map is a strong, dark impression on heavy, stable paper with wide margins in excellent condition. 37.5 cm x 48 cm
