Coloured map of Somerset taken from “The Large English Atlas” by Emmanuel Bowen and Thomas Kitchin, first published in 1749 and considered to be among the finest English county maps of the 18th century. Publishers’ inscription reads: “Printed for Carington Bowles… and Robt. Sayer…” As with most maps from this atlas, all available space is filled with detailed notes and descriptions of the history and topography of the county and its towns. The map also contains an inset plan of Bath and a description of the two divisions of the county. Blank verso. Other than some age toning in the top margin and a short bottom centrefold split, a strong, dark impression in excellent condition. 53 cm x 70 cm
