Coloured maps of the kingdom of Denmark and the Jutland peninsula from the 1601 Latin edition of Abraham Ortelius’ landmark atlas “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum”, the first modern atlas of the world. This plate is the third and final version of the region and first appeared in the Ortelius atlas in 1595. The Denmark map, which is based on the work of Heinrich Rantzovius, presents updated information and more detail than shown on previous versions. The Jutland map, which is based on Mark Jorden’s 1585 map of Denmark, shows a detailed view of the peninsula. The maps are decorated with strapwork cartouches, a sea monster and a sailing ship. A description of the region appears on the verso in Latin. Other than a repaired tear in the bottom blank margin near the centrefold, the maps are finely coloured, dark impressions with wide margins in excellent condition. 34 cm x 48.5 cm
