Coloured map of Cumberland from an early edition of John Speed’s “Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain” published by George Humble. The map contains a plan of the city of Carlisle containing its coat of arms and a key identifying 15 important places. Also shown are decorative engravings of Roman antiquities, the route of the Pict’s (Hadrian’s) Wall in the north, the coats of arms of the Earls of Carlisle and the usual sailing ship and sea monster.
