Coloured map of Cornwall taken from the ca 1693 Philip Lea edition of Christopher Saxton’s atlas, “The Shires of England and Wales…”, first published by Lea in 1689. This example uses the original Saxton plate, which was engraved by Lenaert Terwoort and first issued in 1579, that was significantly reworked for a planned edition of the atlas ca 1665. According to Skelton, such changes included the removal of the arms of Saxton’s benefactor, Thomas Seckford, adding the arms of those who held the title of “Duke of Cornwall” and a prospect of the ancient town of Launceston based on Speed, updating the Royal coat of arms to those of Charles II, adding new place names and geographical features, and changing the title from Latin to English. To his 1689 and later editions, Lea changed the title to include his name, inserted roads based on Ogilby's work and amended town symbols with crosses for market towns and crowns for borough towns. Blank verso. Other than a repair to a bottom centrefold split, a beautifully coloured example with full margins in excellent condition. 36.5 cm x 48.5 cm
