Old coloured map of North America that focuses on the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes. Derived from Delisle’s 1718 map of the region, it is decorated with two large cartouches in opposite corners of the map. The title cartouche in the top left corner contains an image of Father Louis Hennepin, who explored the Great Lakes region and claimed to have reached the mouth of the Mississippi, as well as an inset of a colony of beavers at the foot of Niagara Falls. Generally referred to as the Buffalo Map, the name comes from the image of Native Americans standing by a buffalo in the cartouche on the lower right. The map identifies territories inhabited by Native American tribes and shows routes of various explorers of the region, including de Soto and Hennepin. Other than the usual splits to the top and bottom centrefolds, a fine example of this map in excellent condition. 48.5 cm x 58 cm
