Uncoloured map of the Holy Land by Benito Arias Montano (1527-1598), a Spanish biblical scholar and editor of the Polyglot Bible that was published in Antwerp in 1571-72 by Christophe Plantin. The map, which was taken from Montano’s treatise “Chaleb” in volume 8 of the Polyglot and covers the area on the Mediterranean coast from Beirut in the north to the Nile delta in the south, is based on a manuscript map of the holy land done in the late 14th century. It is oriented to the east, rather than the north, as is common with early maps of the Holy Land and the sea is decorated with sea monsters and sailing ships. The map shows the route of the Exodus from Egypt and is divided into eleven tribal territories. Blank verso. The map is a strong, dark impression in excellent condition. 34 cm x 50.5 cm
