Coloured map of Gloucestershire from an early edition of John Speed’s “Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain” published by Sudbury and Humble. The map contains insets of the cities Gloucester and Bristol, each with keys of important places and paragraphs describing their attributes, the Royal coat of arms and the arms of the noble families of the county. The map also includes a history of two battles, one between the Saxtons and the Vikings and a second between Kings Edward IV and Henry VI in 1471, which was the decisive battle of the War of the Roses. A description of the county appears verso in English. Other than a short bottom centrefold split and a repair to the bottom margin near the plate-mark, the map is a finely coloured, strong, dark impression in excellent condition. 38.5 cm x 51.5 cm
