Large, two-page, outline coloured map of the Indian Ocean and surrounding region taken from the third volume of Pierre Mortier’s “Neptune Francois” entitled “Suite du Neptune François, ou Atlas Nouveau des Cartes Marine” first published in 1700. Consisting of two pages, it comprises two separate maps as can be seen by the title cartouches on opposite sides at the bottom but are sometimes joined in Mortier’s atlas as shown in this example. The map covers the area from the horn of Africa and Arabian Peninsula in the west to Sumatra, the Kingdom of Siam (Thailand) and Grand Thibet (Tibet) in the east. The centre of the map charts several islands including Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Maldives together with the Empires of The Grand Mogol (Mughal) and Persia and the smaller kingdoms of the Indian Subcontinent. Blank verso. The map has been backed in Japanese paper and has minor repairs to the blank margins including some tears that enter the image without loss, otherwise a finely engraved, old-coloured example in very good condition. 59.5 cm x 87 cm
