Coloured map of New England and New York from John Speed’s “A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World” that was included only in the 1676 Bassett & Chiswell edition. The map, which was engraved by Francis Lamb, is based on the Jansson-Visscher maps of the region that were initially published in 1636. It is only example from this series published from in English and, as a result, replaces the previous Dutch terms and place names with English ones. The map covers the area from modern-day Maine in the north to British colony of Maryland in the south and includes the settlements of Boston, New York, New Haven, and Baltimore. As little was known of the interior, the area to the west is engraved with names of Native American tribes and images of indigenous animals. A description of the region appears on the verso in English. The map is a finely coloured, lovely example in excellent condition. 38 cm x 50 cm
