Coloured map of the islands of Jamaica and Barbados from the Bassett & Chiswell edition of John Speed’s “A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World”. Engraved by Francis Lamb, the map is relatively rare as it appeared only once in the final 1676 edition of the “Prospect”. The map, which shows the borders of Jamaica’s precincts along with the towns and topographical details of both islands, is decorated with compass roses, sea monsters, sailing ships and four ornate cartouches; two containing the British royal coat of arms. A description of both islands appears verso in English. Other than a very minor repair to the bottom centrefold in the blank margin, a beautifully coloured, strong impression in excellent condition. 38 cm x 50 cm
