Coloured map of the British Isles taken from Blaeu's grand atlas of the world "Atlas Novus", Volume IV first published in 1645. This map, which is generally considered to be one of the finest maps of the 17th century, shows Britain as it was divided under the Saxon kings. Done as miniatures in the style of contemporary Dutch painters, the 14 vignettes on either side of the map show ancient Saxon kings and their conversion to Christianity. The map is based on the Speed example, first published in 1611, but is considered to be superior to the original. A description appears verso in Dutch. Superb example in excellent condition. 41 cm x 52.5 cm
