Coloured map of the West Indies, Southern United States, Central America and the northern part of South America published by Cornelis Danckerts II, possibly from his atlas of the world issued in 1690 or perhaps separately issued. A summary translation of the Dutch title at the top is “Seat of War in America comprising the American Islands of the Caribbean” and is meant to document the Nine Years War (1688-1697) in which a coalition of European powers (including the Holy Roman Empire, Dutch and English) fought against Louis XIV’s France in both Europe and the New World. The cartographical detail is derived from earlier Dutch maps of the mid-17th century as it was not updated with the most recent discoveries and continues to show inaccuracies, such as the absence of the Mississippi River and a misshapen Yucatan peninsula. The inclusion on the map of the routes taken by the Spanish fleet when transporting silver back to Europe identify this example as the second state of the map issued by Danckerts. The map is decorated with a title cartouche surrounded by clouds and putti. Blank verso. Other than two tiny wormholes, this finely coloured, uncommon map is in excellent condition. 49.5 cm x 57.5 cm
