Coloured sea chart of the south-west coast of Spain from the English version of Waghenaer’s landmark atlas of sea charts “The Mariners Mirrour”. The atlas, which was originally published in Dutch in 1584 and entitled “Spieghel der Zeervaerdt”, was translated into English in 1588 by Anthony Ashley, the Clerk to the Privy Council. This chart, which was engraved by Augustine Ryther and dated 1587, shows the Andalucian coast from island of Sancti Petri and the very start of the Straight of Gibraltar in the east to the town of Huelva and the Odiel River to the west. The chart is decorated with a compass rose, a naively drawn very large fish and two sailing ships. A description of the region appears on the verso in English. Other than a some minor repairs to the margin not affecting the engraved image, a finely coloured example in excellent condition. 33.5 cm x 50.5 cm
