Uncoloured map of the Middle East and Asia Minor from De Jode’s updated 1593 world atlas “Speculum Orbis Terrarum”, which was first issued by Cornelis’ father, Gerard, in 1578. This map, which covers the area from the Black Sea and eastern Mediterranean in the west to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan in the east, is based Giacomo Gastaldi’s two sheet map of the region. The engraving was done by the van Deutecum brothers, who are best known for their work on Waghenaer’s sea charts. As De Jode’s Speculum was not a commercial success and was only issued twice, in 1578 and 1593, maps from these atlases are scarce and much sought after. A description of the region appears on the verso in Latin. The map is in excellent condition. 29.5 cm x 50 cm
