Coloured map of Dorset from the early Sudbury & Humble Latin edition of John Speed’s famous atlas of the British Isles entitled “Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain”. One of the most delightful maps of available of the county, it includes an inset plan of the town of Dorchester and the arms of the noble families of the county. The map is also decorated with a curious horn-playing figure, sea monsters, sailing ships, finely engraved strapwork flourishes and the Royal coat of arms. A description of the county appears on the verso in Latin. Other than a repair to the bottom right corner not affecting the image and some minor water staining to the bottom blank margin, a lovely example in excellent condition. 38 cm x 50.5 cm
