Coloured map of the south-east coast of North America from southern Virginia to northern Florida engraved by Hondius for first edition of the Mercator atlas published in 1606. The only regional map of North America appearing in the atlas, it is principally based on the maps of Virginia by John White and Florida by Jacques le Moynes. Although there is a reasonably accurate depiction of the coast, much of the interior was unknown and contained many errors including the existence of a large lake in Georgia and an undersized Chesapeake Bay (Chesepioock Sinus). The map is decorated with sea monsters, sailing ships, a compass rose and Native Americans both standing and in a canoe. On either side of the title cartouche are two plans of Native American villages, one each in Virginia and Florida. A description of the region appears on the verso in French below which appears - Dddddddd. Other than light water-staining and a horizontal fold, the map is a finely coloured, strong dark impression with wide margins in very good condition. 34 cm x 48.5 cm
