Old-coloured sea chart, heightened with gold, from Volume 1 of Johannes van Keulen’s atlas of sea charts entitled “De Nieuwe Groote Lichtende Zee-Fackel” first published in Amsterdam in 1680. The atlas proved to be very popular and continued to be published throughout the 18th century, during which time it was expanded to six volumes by his heirs including Gerard, Johannes II and Gerard Hulst. Starting from the northwest coast of Africa near Tangier, this chart, which is oriented to the east, follows the Atlantic coastline of Europe from the Iberian Peninsula to the southern coasts of England and Ireland. The chart is decorated with a title cartouche surrounded by a pastoral scene with two men hoisting a coat of arms and two compass roses. Blank verso. The chart has a significant repair to verdigris damage on the northeastern Spanish coastline area from Gijón east to the border with France; otherwise, apart from some minor discolouration, a lovely old-coloured example in good condition. 51.5 cm x 60.5 cm
