A coloured map of north-east North America first published by Visscher in 1655, which was based on an earlier map issued by Jansson in 1651. The 4th state from this series, identified by the privilege notation to the bottom left of the title cartouche, it is considered to be a very important map as it contains only the second published view of New Amsterdam (New York). The prospect view of New Amsterdam, which contains a key to 10 important places in Dutch, is flanked by two native Americans and the coat of arms of Holland appears at the top. As the interior of the region was not yet well explored by Europeans, much of the space is delightfully and naively taken up with depictions of animals such as beavers, bears, deer and turkeys. Blank verso. Other than a repaired bottom centrefold split and some old vertical fold marks, a finely coloured, strong dark impression in excellent condition. 46.5 cm x 55 cm
