An outline-coloured map of India, China and South-East Asia by John Senex prepared for his world atlas entitled “A New General Atlas…” that was first published in London in 1721. The map covers the region from India and the Maldives in the west to New Guinea and the Philippines in the east and from China and Japan in the north to the islands of Java and Timor in the south. As this region was important for the commercial activities of Britain, the areas known to British traders through the activities of the British East India Company are shown with reasonable accuracy and detail, including India and the Indo-China peninsula and surrounding islands. However, the geography of areas less well known to the British, including Japan, Korea and the Philippines are presented much less accurately. The map is decorated with a title cartouche surrounded by a few inhabitants and animals of the region and dedicated to the directors of the East India Company. Blank verso. Other than some minor offsetting within the image and light browning to the blank margins, this uncommon map is a strong, dark impression with full margins in very good condition. 49 cm x 59 cm
