Beautifully coloured town plan of Lowicz originally appearing in the sixth and final volume, first published in 1617, of the landmark Braun & Hogenberg atlas of cities throughout the world entitled “Civitates Orbis Terrarum”. As the sixth volume of the atlas was smaller than its predecessors and published less frequently, plates from this volume are relatively uncommon. This version of the plate is taken from Jan Jansson’s eight volume publication of town plans first published in 1657. The plan shows details of 16th century Lowicz during its period of prosperity under the authority of the Archbishops of Gniezno, including its 14th century gothic castle built on an island, town hall, churches and monastery. A description of the town appears verso in Latin. A strong dark impression with wide margins in excellent condition. 32.5 cm x 49 cm
