Coloured prospect of pre-fire London based on a late 17th century view of the city by Pierre Aveline, a French print seller and engraver. This Latin version of Aveline’s work views London from the south bank, over old London Bridge towards St. Paul’s, which retains it pre-fire steeple, and covers the area from Whitehall Stairs in the west to the Tower in the east. The Thames is prominently shown with numerous sailing ships, the Elizabethan Globe and Swan Theatres can be seen on the south bank and the heads of traitors on pikes appear at the south entrance of the bridge. Below the prospect, there is a key identifying 10 important sites, including St. Paul’s (2), the Tower (5) and St. Mary Overie Church (Southwark Cathedral) (7). Blank verso. There is discolouration to the outer blank margins due to a prior framing, otherwise a finely coloured example in very good condition. 39 cm x 50 cm
