Coloured state 3 map of Essex from the 1637 English edition of Camden’s Britannia. Initially issued in 1607, Britannia was the first publication that contained a complete set of individual county maps of England and Wales. The county maps in Britannia were based on the work of Christopher Saxton and John Norden and were engraved by William Hole and William Kip. The map is decorated with an ornrate title cartouche and a compass rose. The city of London is shown in the lower left hand corner of the map. Blank verso. Other than some minor worm damage in the top margin, the map is an attractively coloured example in very good condition. 28.5 cm x 36.5 cm
