Uncoloured sea chart of the Algarve region of southern Portugual from the English version of Waghenaer’s landmark atlas of sea charts “The Mariners Mirrour”. The atlas, which was originally published in Dutch in 1584 and entitled “Spieghel der Zeervaerdt”, was translated into English in 1588 by Anthony Ashley, the Clerk to the Privy Council. This chart shows the coastlines and depth readings covering the area from the Portuguese town of Sines on the Atlantic in the west to the Andalusian town of Cartaya in Spain to the east. The chart is decorated with a compass rose, sea monsters, sailing ships and a strapwork title cartouche. A description of the region appears on the verso in English. A finely engraved map in excellent condition. 32 cm x 50.5 cm
