Coloured county map of of Cheshire taken from the first edition of John Speed’s “Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain” published by John Sudbury and George Humble. Engraved by Jodocus Hondius, the top centre of the map comprises a plan of Chester, which is based on the survey by William Smith, together with a key identifying important landmarks in the city. The map is decorated with two royal coats of arms surrounded by putti, sea monsters, sailing ships, angels and the arms of the noble families of the county. A description of the county appears on the verso in English. The map is a finely coloured strong, dark impression on heavy, stable paper in excellent condition. 39 cm x 51 cm
