Large, two-page, old-coloured sea chart of the south-west coast of Ireland taken from volume 1 of the “Neptune Francois ou Atlas Nouveau des Cartes Marines.” published by Pierre Mortier and Alexis-Hubert Jaillot in 1693. The chart, which is oriented to the east and displays a great amount of detail concerning coastal areas, towns and rivers of south-west Ireland, focuses on the areas of Galway Bay in the north and the River Shannon and its estuary in the south. An inset at the top centre shows the port of Kinsale, located on the south coast of Ireland, along with its fortifications and castle. According to Koeman, the inset of Kinsale is prominently shown due to its historical significance as it was both where Prince Rupert of the Rhine declared Charles II King after Charles I's execution, and where James II left for France after his defeat at the Battle of the Boyne by William of Orange. The map has been backed in lens paper to stabilize some cracking to the use of verdigris (green) in the old colouring and there are some minor areas of discolouration, otherwise a lovely, old-coloured example on heavy, stable paper in good condition. 60 cm x 86 cm
